Sweet on Trader Joe's Sunday: Bread and Butter

Trader Joe's review: Buttermilk Bread and Grass Fed Buffalo Milk Butter

Maybe this seems like a silly review, but one of these items we buy each week. The other was something that I'd never seen before and had to be tried. I thought they made the perfect tandem review.

Trader Joe's review: Buttermilk Bread and Grass Fed Buffalo Milk Butter

A mom's (my) take: I'd been buying sandwich bread from the bakery for years...or when I was feeling domestic goddess-y, making my own. One day I picked up Trader Joe's buttermilk bread on a whim, and our whole bread routine changed. It's what sliced sandwich bread should be - soft, squishy, tangy from the buttermilk. It's excellent plain and delicious toasted.

Now to the butter. Just the thought of "pink Himalayan sea salt" had me swooning. Unfortunately, the butter did not. There's some sort of aftertaste there that I'm not loving. Can't put my finger on it, but pass me my regular butter. Or Nutella - that'll work, too.
Overall rating:
Buttermilk bread - 5 of 5 stars
Grass Fed Buffalo Milk Butter - 2 of 5 stars

A teenager's (Jack's) take: Ever since we discovered this bread a year or so ago, I can settle for little else. Every part of the bread is soft, and the holes are small, making it rich yet not very porous (perfect for sandwiches!). Finally, its flavor is much more subtle than the sourdough we'd been eating.

This sea salt butter only makes it better by providing a complimentary flavor and consistency. The only complaint I have about it is the sea salt flavor's lack of pizzazz--it could do more to present itself, and you would have to be looking specifically for a sea salt flavor going in to even notice it.
Overall rating:
Bread - 5 out of 5 stars
Butter - 3 out of 5 stars

  1. This is going to sound crazy, but you really have to try the Miyokos vegan cultured butter that TJs sells now! It's actually made from cashews, and has that great flavor that cultured butter has. I like it best as a condiment but you can also swap for regular butter in any baking.
