Trader Joe's Bourbon Cake Mix review

This is it! Day 12 of our 12 Days of Trader Joe's reviews. Ah, the memories.

Trader Joe's Bourbon Cake Mix review

Ok, y'all. We're ending 2018 with Trader Joe's Bourbon Cake Mix. Now, you do need a few of your own ingredients to bake this, namely bourbon for the glaze. That said, I looked at the ingredients list, and there is a bit of bourbon (dried bourbon?) in the mix.

I baked this in a regular-size bundt pan. It didn't come all the way to the top, but that's ok. Follow the baking times on the box.

She says: I wish you could smell this cake. The aroma is beautiful...it smells rich and flavorful. And guess what? IT IS! Deeper in flavor than a vanilla cake; I noticed molasses in the ingredient list, maybe that's the secret. It's delicious with a tender, gorgeous crumb. I didn't love the glaze made as directed on the box. I think it was a bit too thin and a bit too heavy on the bourbon. I'm not a fan of "brown water," so that could be the issue here. That said, I'm making this again, cutting the bourbon in the glaze in half (or replacing with vanilla), and adding a bit more powdered sugar to the glaze mix.
Overall rating: 5 of 5 stars (minus the glaze)

He says (Jack): I wasn't too impressed by this. Maybe because I don't recognize the taste of bourbon, but I didn't think it was super flavorful. Of course, I'll eat just about any cake you throw at me, and it did well in the basic cake categories, but not much beyond that.
Overall rating: 2 out of 5 stars
