You might remember that I tagged along with Mark on a little business trip to Germany in November. While he was working a trade show in Frankfurt, I had several days to explore the city...and you know that means that I was on a bakery hunt.
Before the trip, I had not anticipated all of the INCREDIBLE baked goods in Germany. Sausage? Yes. Beer? Yes. But pastries? That was the happiest of surprises!
While we did travel through more of Germany - and visit many bakeries along the Romantic Road - I was in a castle-induced haze and don't remember all of their names. We'll focus on Frankfurt.
Here are Four Favorite Bakeries in Frankfurt.
Backerei Huck
Bäckerei Huck is located in the famous Kleinmarkthalle. Is it hard to believe that our first stop on our first full day in Frankfurt was a food hall? Probably not. Bäckerei Huck had the most fantastic display of pastries and baked goods. What did I order? A bigger-than-my-head, almond something. I have no idea. What I DO know is that it was delicious...and also, you have to eat it outside. (True story!) Seats in the hall are only for particular stalls. Huck didn't have seats; therefore, you eat outside.
Oh! If you go in the morning for breakfast, be SURE to come back for a sausage sandwich at Schreiber's. Schreiber is an institution. According to what we heard (and I can't find corroboration anywhere), this hole-in-the-wall sausage stand has been run by the same woman for more than 50 years. I DO know that she was lovely...and told me that I did a good job ordering in German. Ha. I mean, JA!

ConditCouture
In the Römerberg historical area of Frankfurt, ConditCouture is worth searching out. A small cafe with limited seating, ConditCouture's bakery case is a sight to behold. We chose Frankfurt's own Bethmännchen (petite almond confections) and Mandelhörnchen. Both were delightful. As a matter of fact, I bought a small BOX of Bethmännchen, and while I waited for Mark to get back to the hotel from the trade show every night, those little treats kept me company. (READ: we didn't bring any home.)

Kaffehaus Goldene Waage
If you want something a little fancier, check out Kaffehaus Goldene Waage. It's also in the Römerberg area, right across from the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew. Actually, I recommend climbing the cathedral tower for a spectacular view of Frankfurt, then rewarding yourself with a treat afterward!
With table service inside and outside this beautifully appointed cafe, you'll want to order your pastry at the counter. They'll bring it to you. It was cold when I visited, and the outside chairs had blankets! So nice! I ordered some sort of chocolate-cherry cake. It was RICH (and you know that's saying a lot coming from me). Also, note the "latte" I ordered in the background. I learned that "latte" doesn't translate in German to what you'd expect in America.

Bäckerei Hanss
If you visit the Städel Museum, add in some extra time to walk over to Bäckerei Hanss. The bakery case here is jam-packed with all sorts of pastries and confections. Tables are overflowing with goodies as well. You'll find bread and pretzels and cake and cookies, oh my!
For as large as the bakery case is, I was surprised to find no seating! (So much for a leisurely cafe breakfast before strolling through the museum.) Here's what you'll do, though. Grab a treat or two, walk out the door and look right. There's a beautiful park right down the street. It's the perfect place to take in the scenery...and inhale that treat! I'm not sure what I ordered; it was similar to this but with pieces of chocolate inside!)
At the time I visited, only 2 patrons were allowed inside due to COVID.
The sign is in German. I learned this the hard way.
