It's really pretty and a kid-pleaser, too.
I tried to scan my mom's recipe card, but our scanner (despite much yelling and bad language on my part) is not cooperating. So...here is mom's recipe...
Strawberry Creme Squares
2 (3 oz) pkgs. strawberry-banana Jell-O
2 c. boiling water
2 (10 oz) pkgs sliced frozen strawberries (I could only find sliced in syrup, that's ok)
1 (13 oz) can crushed pineapple (only able to find 8 oz, so I guesstimated w/ 2 cans)
1 (8 oz) container sour cream
Dissolve jello in boiling water.
{Don't you love that RED?!?}
Add the frozen strawberries and stir occasionally until thawed. Stir in the pineapple.Pour half of the mixture into an 8 or 9" square pan. Chill until firm.
Gently, spread with sour cream. (I used an offset spatula....I don't know how mom did it without!)
Spoon on remaining strawberry mixture instead of pouring so that it won't mix with the sour cream. Chill until firm.
{Pls ignore those floury fingerprints on the pan...I guess I was multi-tasking while taking pictures!}
I took a poll on Twitter and December's Flavor-of-the-Month will be...
Cookies!
Share any cookie: decorated, drop, bars, filled...you name it!
{As always, anyone is welcome to link to Flavor-of-the-Month; you don't have to ask. Click here to read through all of the previous posts for instructions.}
Ready to link up? I'll keep the linky open through December 2nd, then close it to avoid spammers.
Thanks for participating...wow...November was so much fun! I loved reading EACH and EVERY one of those pumpkin recipes!!!
OOOoooo yummy! I have a few recipes in my mother's handwriting too! It makes me feel like she is looking over my shoulder when I make her family recipes!
ReplyDeleteI think that's the same exact recipe that my grandma always made for Thanksgiving! This year was the first year I didn't make it.
ReplyDeleteOh Bridget!
ReplyDeleteThat RED is oh so holiday!
The strawberries...so refreshing!
Don't you just adore old-timey recipes that are so reminding of your childhood?!
I sooo wanted to share my family's traditional Christmas Cookies!
Got up early this a.m. and whipped up the dough...Bake at 350 was calling...I had to get it done! Then...the Christmas Tree had to be tagged and then a long hike. When we returned...I knew it wouldn't be in the best interest of my adored Christmas Cookies to RUSH and decorate!
I hope to post this TRADITION tomorrow!
XXOOXX
That looks so good! Retro desserts rock :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks SO yummy Bridget!! do you know we NEVER have anything like this, yet I love them when I have them somewhere!! My aunt makes a similar one with pretzels in it!! I think I'll pull the recipe out and compare and make one for Christmas!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the linky party!!
~TidyMom
I love the red too! Strawberry and pineapple go together so well. I'll have to try this for sure!
ReplyDeleteYou never go wrong with strawberries and cream cheese. Never. ;)
ReplyDeleteI could do a whole other post on the "Purple Stuff" Jell-O that is a tradition for hubs' family.
my mistake. I thought that was cream cheese. Just looked again. Still sounds good with sour cream. :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks good, I make something a little similar with pretzels...Jello used to be THE thing!
ReplyDeleteI think I linked up wrong...oh well, leave it to me to mess up the easiest of links :)
Yayyyyy!!! You have no clue how HAPPY I was this morning to see you had posted this recipe... My Dear Hubby is on his way home from Iraq, and his absolute favorite desserts are anything with strawberries.... I am going to make this for him and have it waiting for him when he gets home... Thank you for having such a wonderful blog, I am a new follower and I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteI haven't had that jello salad in years. Thanks for reminding me about it.
ReplyDeleteAnd Thanks for hosting!
~Liz
I love retro recipes!! This sounds like something my girls might actually eat!!
ReplyDeleteOooh! That sounds so good.
ReplyDeleteI asked my hubby last night if we had any food traditions and he just looked at me like I was an alien.
But then I remembered [brace yourself] that I do have a food tradition! Every Christmas Eve, I make Kolaches (that's what we call them, but technically, they are not). It's just frozen yeast rolls, thawed and risen, with an tiny smoked sausage tucked inside and baked (at 350, of course).
We eat them for breakfast Christmas morning, but they make a great lunch and dinner too. My group is easy to please :D
Strawberries and sour cream - yum! Sounds tasty, and that red color is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteSorry I did not participate this month. I will definitely chime in next month!
ReplyDeleteCan´t wait to join the fun this month. Unfortunately, I didn´t photograph any of my Thanksgiving dishes, so no blogging--no links. I´m excited to see next month´s posts.
ReplyDeleteoh how yummy! We had something quite like this for thanksgiving too! It was wonderful :D. So sad I didn't get the chance to participate this month, things have been a little hectic. But have no fear, I'll be back for some December FOM action. I might even do two to make up for my absence ;)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I haven't thought about jello salad in years. It did used to be on our holiday table every year. Thanks for bringing it back around!!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds yummy. I am going to give it a whirl!
ReplyDeleteYour post reminded me that I found an early 1960s Jello Salad recipe book for our store, the Best Nest in Old Town Spring. I tucked behind other books because I secretly did not want it to sell!
Now I just have to FIND it in all the boxes of books.
I've never been a Jello fan, but this looks pretty good:)
ReplyDeleteI love ur blog so much-and the red is simply gorgeous.

This looks oh so yummy. I love it
ReplyDeleteWow! Strawberries I love strawberries. This is a good recipe thanks.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of a retro Jello dessert we always had in my family. My aunt made it one year and she was required to bring it to every family gathering afterwards! It was peach jello, cream cheese, mashed pears, and Cool Whip. We just called it "Pink Stuff" but it was delish!
ReplyDeleteWow, that recipe looks SO good and certainly brings back memories from my childhood!
