ReplyDeleteSugar cookies. Then the family decorates (eats them as we decorate) to have has we open presents. Good yummy memories
ReplyDeleteMy favorite recipes aren't what many people would consider "exciting", "trendy" or "way cool" as they're OLD family recipes, many that have been in the family for over a 100 years now. It's ones such as Gingerbread Cake (which actually TASTE like gingerbread, not this flavorless cardboard stuff out of a box so many kids today think of as gingerbread), the family squash pies instead of pumpkin pies. They are made with basically the same seasonings and our family likes them better than pumpkin. It's not Thanksgiving or Christmas without them. A few others that mean Christmas to us are what some call Gingerbread cookies, my older relatives always called them Ginger Cakes. The recipe is approximately 150 years old. My great-grandmother who was actually my babysitter and whom played a huge roll in raising my dad used to make these by the lard can fulls during the holidays. If you don't know what a lard can size is, picture the normal can of popcorn that is sold this time of year at Rite Aid and other locations and make it two to three times as large. THAT is the quantity people used to buy their lard. Once they finished a can they were GREAT for other storage uses. Then I have another great aunt's Applesauce Cake which turned out the best I've ever made this year due to a happy misfortune. I haven't even begun another great aunt's White Fruit Cakes or my one grandmother's peanut brittle. Thankfully my mother still makes her mother's Filled Cookies. Since they have a lot of raisins I've never been crazy about them but boy my brother loves them. It seemed each of the women in my family all had their holiday speciality. I somehow ended up with a lot of great aunts and all of my older relatives are gone now. My parents, whom are in their 70s are the older generation. Since I'm the baker in the family its somehow fallen to me to keep up all the traditions. We don't want to let the family traditions go but while each woman used to specialize in her one item, it's getting to be a lot of work for me to do them all. All I know is that baking techniques used to be VERY different than what we do today. However I don't want to mess with these recipes and especially with ones like the squash pies, every year they astound me that they work. They are SO different I don't understand how they always come together. Baking to me has always been a little "magical". When you think about it you put in an oven this wet, sloppy, often goopy mess and anywhere from a few minutes to an hour and a half later out comes this amazing treat.
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful list of memor-recipes! Preserve them well!
