Did you know I've been living vicariously through you? Yes, you there....the one with the snow.
For those of us living in South Texas, snow seems very magical. I'm picturing your kids coming in from making snow angels with little pink cheeks and noses. I dream of being bundled up in sweaters, scarves and coats with fur-trimmed (fake, or course) hoods. I can just see your family bursting in the front door to find a bubbling pot of chili on the stove and a fire in the fireplace.
{Yes, I've given this a little thought.}
So, these cookies are for you. We don't wear many hats and mittens around here; we have to EAT them. ;)
These winter cap and mitten cookies are really simple to make. What I love about using this "wet-on-wet" technique, is that you can make many different designs all at the same time.
To make them, you'll need....
- winter cap & mitten cookies
- royal icing tinted with Americolor
Bright White, Super Red & Turquoise
- disposable icing bags
- decorating tip, #3
- squeeze bottles
- toothpicks
- white sanding sugar
- small paintbrush
- meringue powder
Using a #3 tip, outline cookies. I used a #3 tip here rather than a #2 because I wanted the outline to really show.
Thin all colors with a bit of water until the icing is the consistency of a thick syrup. Cover with a damp dishcloth and let sit several minutes.
Uncover and stir gently with a rubber spatula to pop air bubbles that have risen to the surface. Transfer icings to squeeze bottles.
Working 6-8 cookies at a time, fill in the main color and the white trim. Use a toothpick to guide into edges.
Going back over the same cookies, add lines or dots with the other colors.
You can make dots.....
...or try marbling.
I thought dragging the toothpick ACROSS the lines made it look a little like cable knit.
Let dry overnight.
The next day, mix equal amounts meringue powder with water. (I used 1/2 tsp. each for 1 dozen cookies.)
Using a small paintbrush, paint on the mixture on the trim and top of cap. Sprinkle on the sanding sugar over a coffee filter. Let the excess fall onto the filter and use that as a funnel to put back in the bottle.
Is it snowing where you are?!? Tell me the fun you are having! I want to hear ALL about it!
You are an amazing artist. I wish you lived in Colorado so I could take lessons from you...and eat those yummy cookies!
ReplyDeleteShawn
Haha, I'd trade you these cookies over the snow any day! Apparently I've grown old and crotchety, because I can't stand the snow. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying my 6th straight day of being snowed in and enjoying! Taking lots of pics of the birds and deer enjoying the snow that is piling up, quilting, playing with my two girls and cooking, of course! With wind chill it has been below zero some days so not much outside enjoyment of the snow this time! oh, well!
ReplyDeleteWell, it's not snowing now, but we got 19 inches on wednesday! I get to walk to work in it and try not to fall down! (Cute cookies!)
ReplyDeleteI never thought I'd say this, but having moved to central texas this summer, I miss the snow.
ReplyDeleteThe cookies are adorable, going to pass them on to my daughter, a pastry chef in Chicago.
Is that cupcake thing, featured in the third picture from the bottom a dishcloth? If so, it's adorable!
ReplyDeleteI have yet to experience the snow... That would be magical for me too! =) I love the colors of these cookies..makes me wanna cuddle up with a hot cup of cocoa. =)
ReplyDeleteI'm further South in Texas than you but luckily on January 22 the Brackenridge Main Event Center in Edna is having their Winter Carnival and Snow Day. They bring the snow to south Texas!!
ReplyDeleteBridget, your cookies are always gorgeous. I would definitely send you some snow if I could.
ReplyDeleteLOVE them! Love the colors!!
ReplyDeleteyou have my address to send them? right?
snow here....4 right now
Complete and utter darling-ness! I love the color combo and what a great theme.
ReplyDeleteOh Bridget, how I wish I still had that South Texan frame of mind. I'm done with this snow!
ReplyDeleteBridget, your skills amaze me!!
ReplyDeleteDarling!
ReplyDeleteNot only do I want to eat those little gems, I want a pair of mittens and hat to *wear* that look like that? Can you knit too?
ReplyDeleteI was trying to find the letters to write that sound \when one breathes in fast out loud when they see something gorgeous. Don't know how that would go, so hopefully I just conveyed it :) (I posted a link on ediblecrafts.craftgossip.com)
ReplyDeleteSo darling!
ReplyDeleteSo cute! I especially love the little hats :)
ReplyDeleteWe have so much snow here that is not fun any more. My husband spent 2 hours on Wednesday trying to get the car out, but Camilla is definitly having some fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the cookies!! I can almost taste them.
I live in Denmark, and we have been pretty much covered in snow since late november. I absolutely love snow, and have enjoyed watching it, rolling around in it (yes, I did...), throwing snowballs at my boyfriend (who did not appreciate it all that much) and just generally loving the snow... It has, however, started to thaw now, so everything is wet and slippery, and I fell down last sunday, and hurt myself a bit (actually, a lot, but i'm better now...).
ReplyDeleteBut I still love the snow! (I really love your cookies as well!)
Yes, we've got plenty of snow, a storm dumped about 18 inches this week - I'd gladly send you some. The cookies are adorable!
ReplyDeleteOh my word!! I didn't think you could amaze me even more than you already do...these are adorable!
ReplyDeleteIt is not snowing right now but we have a lot of snow on the ground and it probably won't all be gone until late June. It can be beautiful and fun, but it is also time consuming - lots of shoveling and snow blowing every time we need to leave the house during a snowy day.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your amazing cookie ideas!
Super cute and I love the colors you chose. We may have to make these fun cookies. I finally started trying these this year and it is so easy, why did I wait so long! Love them and I will send you some of our snow - record levels!
ReplyDeleteLove it! :)
ReplyDeletewhere in south texas are you? my parents are winter texans in weslaco and i'm on my way there in a few weeeks. its -37celcius here today, TONS of snow and sooo cold. cookies are super cute :)
ReplyDeleteLove these cookies, the colors are perfect! No snow here in Mobile, AL...although it did get so cold last night our pipes froze! I'm ready for spring!
ReplyDeletethey are so pretty, I love the colors. We don't get snow either, but can drive just over an hour to enjoy it :)we went a few weeks ago and they had two feet of fresh snow, it was magical!
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable!!!
ReplyDeleteCute as cute could be. I think I really need these cookies to help me enjoy the last of this melting snow and ice. It'd just be perfect.
ReplyDelete{Of course, they'd be perfect without snow, too!}
I found your blog awhile ago through...well, actually I don't remember now, but I'm sure glad I did! These cookies are adorable.
ReplyDeleteAnd as far as the snow goes, it's really more pretty to look at than to be in. I white-knuckled it the whole way home from work last night in a snowstorm. It's about this time of year that I start vowing to live somewhere warmer!
LOVE the color combo you used, Bridget!! You have such an eye for great combinations.
ReplyDeleteThese are great...from North Texas...where our snow melted away, but was fun for Sunday and Monday
ReplyDeletelove, love these cookies
I love these! We got snow...but not these amazing cookies. We stuck to snow cream for snow day treat.
ReplyDeleteSnow seems far off here too in sunny southern California! It was 75 degrees today in January!
ReplyDeleteWe are having so much fun with snow here in our tiny Utah town! Frozen pipes. Ice clogged gutters that leaked water into the house and ruined the paint job in our newly remodeled bathroom. Oh wait, maybe we aren't having so much fun after all. ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I love seeing your creations and these are just stunning. We no longer have snow on the ground here in Va, but maybe I can be half as good as you with these cookies by the time we have snow next year.
ReplyDeleteSeriously my favorite combination of colors.. I LOVE THESE!! You never cease to amaze me girl :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Those are so pretty!!
ReplyDeleteI live in Denver, CO and we had a big snow on Sunday/Monday (Jan. 9 an 10). Mostly I just look forward to going to the mountains to SKI! But it is nice for cuddling up on the sofa in sweatpants with your loved ones.
ReplyDeleteThese are sooooo cute! I'm going to make some to send to the college kids next week.
ReplyDeleteI have the hat and mitten cutter even! Just don't have the decorating skills yet, need to practice!
We have snow but now we have rain rain for FIVE days! I do not like rain on top of my snow. It should be snowing!!!!
way toooooo kuh-YOOT to eat - these are just TOOO CUTE TO EAT!!! talent in spades Bridget (i do believe i have misspelled your name a time or two so my apologies - do you still like me???)
ReplyDeleteThose cookies are adorable! I live in South Texas too! I still get choked up and misty-eyed just thinking of 2004 when we got a foot of snow on Christmas eve/day. I will be my most memorable Christmas ever!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Lorilee
wow gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteNo snow to report here in Southern California, on the contrary today's weather was Sunny and in the mid 70s... hmmm what type of cookie what that call for? I'm sure whatever it is, you'll make it look gorgeous. XOXO
ReplyDeleteFor those of us living in Canada, we are used to the snow. We may not like it all the time and get tired of it after several months but we never, ever get tired of seeing your wonderful cookies! I love the colours you used for these and you are one of the best decorators with with the wet-on-wet technique! I wish I had a set of hat and mittens as cute as these. Perhaps I wouldn't look like such a tool when I bundle up to face our winters. LOL
ReplyDeleteOh, Bridget....my FAVORITE winter color combination!!
ReplyDeleteAnd, I'd be happy to share our snow with you ANYTIME!!
Love that color combo!!!
ReplyDeleteI live in Michigan, where it snows for half the year, and thanks to xmas specials and commercials and the like I still imagine it as magical... until I'm outside, pants soaked from bottoms to thigh, scraping 5 inches of snow and 2 inches of ice from my windshield. But it's ok, I'm sure I idealize the snow-free lifestyle as well. ;)
ReplyDeleteNo need to tell you how adorable those cookies are... Wish I had half your talent, I'd love to send those to my sister in El Paso, just as a reminder of what she's missing.
Where in Texas do you live? I've read your blog for what seems like forever and never realized you lived in Texas.
ReplyDeleteI really like your image of snow, I wish it actually was like that, haha. Trust me, you're missing absolutely nothing. After one day of snow, you would be so incredibly sick of it. Getting up early to shovel and warm up your car so it'll defrost in time to drive to work, snow creeping into your heavy-duty water proof boots so that your feet freeze and then you get a nasty cold, and slush and muck everyone. i really wish i lived down south during the winter, its no fun. your cookies are so adorable though, i have got to try the dot method next time i make sugar cookies!
ReplyDeleteNO, it is not snowing here! (much to my chagrin) I live in "sunny" California. It was in the 70s today. Yesterday, it rained. No snow for us. Darn! But yes, I love your cookies. YOu are SO creative, Bridget! Now go bake some more cookies!
ReplyDeleteu always inspire me,..
ReplyDeleteI found your site in mid November, and fell in love with the cookies, so at the beginning of December, I made my first cookies!! I had bought a cookie cutter set during the after Christmas sales last year, so it was a mini set of 6 different shapes. Gingerman, gingerwoman, gloves, stocking, dove, and a tree. they were about an inch in size and super cute (even if my color wasn't quite right). I am excited to try again!!
ReplyDeleteThis post made me sooooooooooo homesick...the North East is covered in snow, and it *is* just as *magical* as you imagine it. :)
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable! I love the marbling!
ReplyDeleteWe have lots of snow up here in Michigan, about 8 inches yesterday and more coming tonight! It's absolutely beautiful!
So cute!!! I'd rather have these than the real thing anyday :D
ReplyDeleteWe have plenty of snow here, you can have it if you like. Being TX born I was not made for so much snow. My son however is in love with it! He and his friends have been out in it everyday. I stay in and fix the cocoa!
oh, i have always wanted to be able to make these kind of cookies. reading your blog makes me think i might actually be able to do it.
ReplyDeletethey are just pieces of art!
I am in love with these. Love the color combination!
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful work you do! When I have my own kitchen again I shall try your techniques. You make them so accessible!
ReplyDeleteI am in Calgary, Alberta and we have snow up the ying-yang. :-) Normally that is great as we are about 80 minute drive from some of the best skiing in the world but right now it is COLD. At one point -35 celcius with the wind chill factor added in. However that makes for a lovely day in a warm house watching the snow and learning how to spin on a spinning wheel.
Thanks for sharing you lovely work and teaching us to make our world's a little prettier - 1 cookie at a time!
Janet
Love these Winter COOKIES Bridget... we are living as you... dreaming of a white winter lol...
ReplyDeletebeautiful cookies! No more snow here in Belgium... 14° C already
ReplyDeletewe have mounds & mounds of what was once white snow since the christmas blizzard…
ReplyDeleteLOVE your cookies…so cute…actually LOVE all your posts & cookies…you are very talented & creative!
I've as a last resort liked things like sand clocks, lava lamps, and the like to good of virtuous dish out space staring at it as a cut of catharsis. In a way, it helps me with meditation, to free lay stress and well-grounded think in the air nothing. That's why since I was a kid, instead of dolls and cars I've perpetually at ease more of such pieces like sand clocks, lava lamps, musical boxes etc. So I was most charmed when I base the 2-Laser + LED Inconsiderable Show Laser Ace Gyroscope with Music Effects from DealtoWorld.com protection the Toys section. It's like a harmonious box, a spinning better, and a light verify all rolled into one. Which is capacious relaxation! The gyroscope wishes spin after round a minute. The laser slight display with accompanying music makes this gyroscope a pretty corresponding exactly toy that my friends have also been most amused with.
ReplyDeleteMy dogs are also fair curious around the laser gyroscope I got from DealtoWorld.com. They unceasingly follow the gyroscope as it spins, although at principal they kept barking at the laser light accompany, and also because it produces music. But after they got worn it, they've stopped barking but due watch over following the gyroscope whenever I start spinning it. Kids are also unbelievably amused nearby it. Off it's good to have entertaining toys about the blood so that you can leave the bit of frippery trifle with on while the kids are being amused or playing with it while you open to get up viands or get changed. The gyroscope is unified such fool with with this purpose.
The gyroscope I bought from DealtoWorld.com has a dragon as a map on it, and produces a dainty accompany with red, downcast, and green colours. Pit oneself against a look at the pictures I've uploaded of the gyroscope with laser luminosity show. The music produced from the gyroscope is not that great but facts adequacy to consider any supplementary customer to the house. The gyroscope is red and black, making it look very coolth, and somewhat masculine with that dragon imprint.
The music dismount attack plain gyroscope runs on 6 LR44 batteries, which are replaceable anyway. I've also euphemistic pre-owned this gyroscope to their heels my girlfriend during our anniversary celebration. I did the cheesy thing of decorating the hostelry cell with roses and when I led her in, I started up the gyroscope as affectionately so that the laser light clarify produces a ideal effect. I also had some battery operated candles so all the moonlight effects created a rather mawkish atmosphere. She loved it, not later than the way, to my relief. I also bought the candles from DealtoWorld.com. These days it seems to be my non-performance shopping placement in favour of all gifts and ideas in support of romantic occasions.
Since Christmas is coming, this laser lamp make clear gyroscope can perhaps be a momentous Christmas give-away looking for the toddler or in spite of the humour! Alternatively, the gyroscope can simply be a gracious reckoning to the traditional Christmas decorations. I can imagine placing it just about the Christmas tree and peradventure spinning it when guests arrive in the house. Looks like DealtoWorld.com is getting my subject anyway again!
We got ~22 inches of snow in ~1 week here in MN so I'd gladly share some snow with you! I'll let you believe your little snow fairy tale & won't tell you the truth about snow LOL. Love the cookies, super cute!
ReplyDeleteThese are gorgeous!! I'm definitely not a baker, but these caught my eye. Wow!
ReplyDeleteWe don't get that much snow here in Maryland (except last winter... ) and I like that when we do it goes away fast. I grew up in the south of France... so cold weather is not my thing :).
ReplyDeleteAs usual your cookies are a feast for the eyes! You must have such a huge collection of cookie cutters :)
Love the toothpick effects - reminds me of making designs in soap!
ReplyDeleteCool hats and mittens. Your precision and attention to detail are unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteAs I read this it was ironically Crazily snowing outside here. Its a really beautiful soft snow - perfect to inspire me to try out these cookies as they are soo sooo CUTE and you did an amazing job, you are so talented at these!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutley unbeleivablle talent! This are darling and so impressive.Spectacular work!
ReplyDeleteYou're in Texas too? That's awesome! I'm in the Central TX, San Marcos area!
ReplyDeleteHere in PA we have lots of snow...I could send ya some! The cookies look adorable and would go great with a winter themed party.
ReplyDeleteThese cookie are so adorable!
ReplyDeleteAnd you are more than welcome to have some of our winter. I've had enough already. :)
Oh WOW! These are stunning - you are so talented!
ReplyDeleteJo-Anna
Actually, I think I'd rather have those cookies than the real snow.
ReplyDeleteWe've had 22 degree weather here and snow all over the ground since December. Days of snowmen and snowball fights and dinners of chili and vegetable soup. Although it's pretty and creates a cozy atmosphere, it IS rather cold and gloomy. Your cookies look fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI've driven to work in two blizzards in the last month. Too much for me! For the first, I was on my way home from work late at night. Visibility on the highway was down to 20-30 feet. Scary! Thank goodness my boyfriend allowed me to use his Jeep. This last one dumped 18 inches in a matter of 12 hours. That's heavy snowfall!
ReplyDeleteIt's times like this I wish I could be in Texas, taking cookie lessons from you. No worries -- I'd only want to stay until the snow melted .... sometime in March. ;-)

My favorite color combo! Beautiful cookies, Bridget! Those are my kind of snow hats and gloves...75 degrees here today:)
ReplyDeleteI'd trade snow for sun anyday! And I'd try and trade to get those biscuits too :) They are gorgeous
ReplyDeleteNo snow here. It was 80 degree weather today. I love these cookies; they are the cutiest and the colors are great. Your so talented!
ReplyDeleteI love these~ We have actually had a LITTLE snow here in Southern Oklahoma and we appreciate it very much ~ I am just not liking the BLACK ICE!!!
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute! I love the colors! We finally have snow to go with our cold temps in PA. But, I'm ready for some warm weather.
ReplyDeleteBook marking this for my daughter - her first attempt at icing cookies in this manner were without instruction and she was very disappointed. I think your step by step and photos are very friendly to her preferred mode of learning.
ReplyDeleteAnd your day-dream of snow must be a stock one - it's the same imagery for Northern families I imagine here in sunny Florida.
Wow these cookies are adorably cute! I love how easy it is to do the pattern on them, but it looks really intricate.
ReplyDeleteBridget-
ReplyDeleteYour cookies make me so happy! I love them all and am amazingly jealous of your skills. These are cookie perfection!
-Jamie
I love these!! They are so cute! :)
ReplyDeleteYou make me laugh - snow. I live in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and it NEVER snows here. The temp today is 86, according to the converter I found on the net. Love your blog, have been following for about 6 months now. I'm still trying to work up the courage to try making them. One day I will.
ReplyDeleteJackie
I live in Rhode Island and we still have 12 inches of snow on the ground I will gladly share! LOL You are an artist with cookies! I'm afraid if I try to decorate my cookies to look like yours I will be painfully disappointed. :-S
ReplyDeleteCould you tell mw how big they are. I am thinking they look larger in the pic than in life. thanks love them!!!
ReplyDeleteThese are truly gorgeous!! No snow here either, but those cookies sure make me feel like winter :)
ReplyDeleteOh Bridget: These are so cute, I have been collecting supplies to begin...how do you store your cookie cutters to keep them straight and nice? And, I don't know about my cookies...how thick do you roll them out?
ReplyDeleteLisa
Interesting to see that you are from south Texas, so am I. I'm in Victoria and love that we don't have ice and snow. Though some cold days are nice. I've just started doing cookie decorating. Did dotty trees for Christmas and have plans for Valentine cookies soon.
ReplyDeleteYour cookies, never, ever, EVER cease to amaze me. These are the cutest cookies i Have ever seen...unless maybe on the last post you did. Hm...

Love your cookies - and just come up to Kansas for snow - it isn't that far :) We had 8 inches last week, and starting around noon today we'll see another 4-7 on top of that!! We'll just trade houses....deal?!
ReplyDeleteI cannot express enough how absolutely incredible I think you and your blog is! I love cooking, experimenting and even am in culinary school, but the way in which you share all your little tricks and ideas is just awesome and continue to inspire me! You make everything seem like we can all do it :) Thanks so much!!
ReplyDeleteOh, and no snow here either, sometimes I wish it were, other times, I could just go straight to a beach with a Mai Tai :)
I just finished cleaning up the HUGE mess that I made attempting to duplicate these cookies. My first time using RI. I did the same colors even. I was soooo surprised how much Super Red is needed to get a RED icing still. HOW in the daylights do you easily transfer the flood icing to the squeeze bottle??? OY!! I am pretty happy with how mine turned out for the first time and all. I will post pictures after they have been received by the kids - it is a surprise for them. :D
ReplyDeletePlease answer my questions - there has to be a better way to do things.
I have watched your videos and those at U of Cookie and then I LOL at my own kitchen. You all have a couple instruments out, a clean counter and so on. I had about 23 spoons out, stuff ALL OVER the ding dang counter - sugar, corn syrup, tips, couplers, bowls. NO VIDEOS being taped in my kitchen. :D
ReplyDeleteI live just east of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. we just get 2 feet of snow. lol and more is coming tomorow. Would love to be in texas but, i truly would miss the snow. I Love It!
