Here's the low-down on the different types of cookie accoutrements:
Nonpariels: These might be my favorite. Maybe it was all of those years eating "chocolate stars" at the movies. Remember those? Anyone?
The multi-colored ones are really cute, too. Can't find the mix you want? Mix them yourself! I mixed black and white nonpareils for these cookies.
Sugar Pearls: a little bigger than nonpareils and with a pearly sheen. I have never used these, but could not resist buying these sweet pink ones.
Next we have jimmies. Chocolate Jimmies are the most common jimmies...and every time I use them, I can't help but think of Seinfeld. "Jimmy likes these jimmies."
Dragees: Did you eat these as a kid? Me, too. Now they are for "decorative purposes only." Yeah, right.
{PS...dragee is pronounced "draah-zhA," not "drag-EE" like someone might have said in front of a group of people at THE Lodge. *blush*} It's dragees, dahhhling.
Sparkling sugar versus sanding sugar: Sanding sugar is finer than sparkling sugar and, I think, a little more sparkly.
Sugars come in all sorts of colors...even gold!
And, last but not least.....SPRINKLES!!!
Repeat after me....."Sprinkles fix everything."
Still works for me, Wednesday of not! I will be refferring to this OFTEN! Love it!
ReplyDeleteA little sparkle never hurt anyone! Or a cookie!
ReplyDeleteSanding sugar and Sprinkles are my favorites, they make everything look more pretty and beautiful :)
ReplyDeleteI love your "works for me wednesday" posts :)
They are really useful :)
What would we do with you?!? I shall remember that pronunciation for-EVAH and save a serving of humble pie for another faux pas!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the lesson in pronunciation and sprinkles!
holy moly I have been saying it wrong for a long long time...THANKS!
ReplyDeleteSprinkles do fix everything! Thanks for the pronunciation tip -- I would have been in the same boat. And I loved chocolate stars!!!
ReplyDeleteLove sprinkles! This was a great run down!
ReplyDeleteYou're so right about the sprinkles! They're a great way to make mishap look fantastic. And yup, we ate 'em plain as children too. All kinds, down the tube. Goooo sugar!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more...you're so wise!! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree - this would work for me any ole day of the week! But, I do love how you don't give up!
ReplyDeleteI like this post!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post! I collect sprinkles like they're going out of style! And yes, sprinkles do fix everything! =)
ReplyDeleteI always thought Jimmies were sprinkles.
ReplyDeleteI've always said 'those shiny round ones' because I was was worried i'd say it wrong, now I know :)
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog and I love it! Following you!
ReplyDeleteSprinkles do fix everything! I like the sugar pearls, they are so pretty and delicate.
ReplyDeleteI still love the little chocolates with the white Non-parariels on them!!!! You can buy a theatre box at Walgreens for a buck! There called "Sno-Caps" ! I have a whole collection of decorating goodies....and I plan on putting them in some cute jars ( and displaying them for the holidays....when I was younger I would take a spoon to a bottle on Non Parariels and eat the whole bottle! No more.....but just seeing your photo of the multi colored ones I can taste them in my mouth! Yum! :):) Sandy
ReplyDeleteFun! I like the picture of the sugar pearls.
ReplyDeleteWhere do you find the dragees? Now that they are considered "non-edible" they are so hard to come by!
ReplyDeleteAll of those sweet sugary treats just make me *happy*...as do you! :)
ReplyDelete{zombie voice} Spriiinkles fiiix eeeeverything.... :) And you're right. They do. LOVE this post, not just great cookie candy - great eye candy!! So pretty.
ReplyDeleteSprinkles! Yes, they do fix and enhance everything. Lovely post & photos..
ReplyDeleteAll so adorable! I call them Jimmies too but that is totally an East Coast thing. When I moved to Michigan and then down South everyone just calls them Sprinkles and has no idea what I'm talking about!!
ReplyDeleteThis is WHY I wish my name was SPRINKLES!
ReplyDeleteWhat is not CUTE about a sprinkle!
I wonder if I SPRINKLED my hot yoga hair would it look CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah....haha!
I've decided I like the big sanding sprinkles vs. the sanding sugar.
I too grew up on those dragees. {sp?}
My mother and grandmother always put them on Christmas cookies.
That's hilarious they are designated for "decorating purposes only!"
Like I'm going to take one off a cake or cookie before eating. ;o)
When we went to Germany and England we found the most AMAZING dragees! {still...misspelled!}
They had them in every color...every size...I mean they had dragees as big as a huge jelly bean!
Only in Europe!
SPRINKLES make me HAPPY!
They just do!
They make me HAPPY...just like Bake at 350 does!
Just like YOU do!
You my SWEET Bridget...are a gift!
You are a SWEET gift...sprinkled with a trillion sprinkles!
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
Because you call jimmies jimmies, you are now my favorite.
ReplyDelete...Heart. You.
Weary of seeing some wonderful decorating materials on cookies that were only available online, I once tweeted and asked if anyone knew a cake decorating shop in Denver.
ReplyDeleteI was given a suggestion; scheduled a field trip and for me was very much a 'kid in the candy store' experience.
I might have a 2nd mortgage now but that's OK cause I've also got sanding sugars in every imaginable color, sprinkles and dragees galore (and I would have embarrassed myself too...really. I would have never imagined!).
Love this post and love how all of your posts are sprinkled with your delightful wit.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lesson in dragee pronunciation, now I can refer the *them* correctly instead of calling them silver or gold candy beads!
A whole post dedicated to sprinkles!? Must be my lucky day!!
ReplyDeletemegmacdesigns.blogspot.com
oh my gosh! My daughter would totally agree with you. Ever since she was 2 she had to have sprinkles on EVERYTHING! yogurt, waffles, oatmeal--if i couldnt get her to eat it-I'd put sprinkles on it and it magically disappeared!
ReplyDeleteI am kinda a sprinkle floozy...they have saved my behind many a time
ReplyDeletegreat post Bridget!!....and I always said drag EE too! haha..did you know on Webster.com you can listen to a word being pronounced? I just listed so I could be sure to say it correctly if I'm ever invited to the Lodge! haha http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Dragees
ReplyDeleteYou're so right...sprinkles really perk things up!
ReplyDeleteI would have never guessed how to correctly pronounce dragees either:) Is it French?
Great tutorial... Suddenly I have the urge to go spend *way* too much money on decorations for some cookies :)
ReplyDeleteI just love your cookies. I am so impressed. I have started a blog - Baked! by Bec. I really just started it as a sort of resume since I would love to bake for people. Anyways, I am rambling ... I need to try your cookie decorating so badly!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this great post. I have been pronouncing this word wrong for the longest. @tidymom thanks for the link so i can listen to it at Webster. I didnt even know they did that. Feeling old..
ReplyDeleteSo glad you called them jimmies! People here in Virginia look at me like I'm crazy when I call them that. They call them sprinkles here.
ReplyDeleteAmy @ A Little Nosh
Maybe this why I can't bake. I can't pronounce any of these and never know what they are. They sure look pretty, though! Great post~
ReplyDeleteSo true! Love it Bridget!
ReplyDeleteWhat you call jimmies, we call sprinkles here in Toronto. What you call sprinkles....I have no name for it. I'd call it decorations.
ReplyDeleteCan I coat someone I don't like in sprinkles too? I bet that would make them cuter... ; )
ReplyDeleteThanks for this primer on the options! Do you have a post that describes how to use these in conjunction with the royal icing? As in, how much time to let the icing sit before sprinkling on the sugar for different effects? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI thought they were pronounced drag-EES also. Thanks for teaching me otherwise before I have had to say it outloud! ;)
ReplyDeleteI want to cover the top of my layer cake with "shiny" sugar - preferably with less processed sugar. Which one is "less" processed?? The sanding sugar looks pretty good to me. Which one is MORE palatable or pleasing to everybody's taste?????
