So, you want to start baking and decorating cookies? Well, there's no reason why you need to fill your guest room closet with over 300 cookie cutters. {Ahem.}
Here are a few to get you started on your collection...
Circle, Square and Rectangle. These babies are obvious multi-taskers. Squares can be a little tricky to find. I asked for them at my local bakery supply, and the man there told me to get a ruler and hand-cut them. After I stopped laughing, I left the store, hopped online and found one.
Scallops. Oh, how I love a scalloped edge. Scallops = instant cute, instant pretty. You don't need
every shape with a scalloped edge, but I'd at least get one.
Hearts. This is about a third of my heart cookie cutter collection. I love hearts....how can you not? Hearts are always appropriate.
Daisy and Candy Corn. Daisies are such cute and easy cookies. They're adorable in their own, but I love to throw them in with another shape to make
an assortment. (And don't think the shape is just limited to
flowers.) Candy Corn...I know, that sounds weird, but the shape is perfect for making things other than
candy corns. How about a
box of popcorn, or a
face?
Present, Ornament and Tiered Cake. All three of these are multi-taskers. Presents: birthdays, Christmas...you name it. Ornaments: every Christmas seems to bring some new design for the good ol' ornament cutter. Like
this or
this or
this. Tiered Cake? Weddings, bridal showers,
birthdays...this is one of my favorite cutters of all.
Now, where to GET cookie cutters? Honestly, some of these have been in my collection for YEARS, and I've long forgotten where I picked them up. Thank goodness for Google! Try searching for the specific cookie cutter shape...even put it in quotes, such as "scalloped circle cookie cutter."
Here are a few websites I would check as well:
Do you have a favorite cookie cutter?
I have a cookie cutter collection too. How do you store them? I find that when I want one particular cutter it takes forever to find the right one. Maybe I have too many. :)
ReplyDeleteMy copper Eiffel Tower cookie cutter. I'd love some storage tips, too. Right now mine are fighting it out for space, jumbled up in plastic containers.
ReplyDeleteSave the cookie cutters!
I put up a pegboard and hooks... It works! :)
DeleteHello Carrie,
DeleteI save my cookie cutters in boxes. I have one for flowers, one for hearts, one for animals, one for x-mas, and manny more. Works for me.
Happy baking,
Ingeborg
The Netherlands
I love that Daisy cookie cutter- that's so cute! I have a very limited cookie cutter selection right now, but I'm excited to work on expanding it!
ReplyDeleteI have a big cookie collection too, but Im never count them lol, my favorite cookies cutters are blossom flower cutter and daysies cutter and of course hearts, I love them and love to create with them but space is always a factor to have in mind.
ReplyDeleteI have A LOT of cutters. I think one of my favorites is my mini-scalloped-edged heart. I can easy get 60 on a cookie sheet and they are so easy to decorate.
ReplyDeleteI also love my onesie cutter. Besides making tons of onesies for baby showers, I have turned it into different styles of shirts, a bathing suit, a baseball jersey, and even panties!
I actually picked up Christmas & Easter ones from Good Will - never used, never opened!
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I have some great cookie cutters in my shop also

Right now my favorite is my scalloped (i call it crinkle) heart shape!
ReplyDeleteThe local thrift stores here in urban San Diego are quite fabulous and fun and I have picked up plenty of kitchen items from Le Crueset to cookie cutters for a nickle at them and that makes me happy.
ReplyDeleteSo would a trip to Williams Sonoma or Sur La Table :)
Fun post!
I have been collecting cookie cutters since my kids were little. We used to make cookies for every occasion. I probably have over 400(last count). I keep them in the scrapbook paper square containers because they stack well. I label them according to subject or holiday.
ReplyDeleteI love my cookie cutters, I like getting the nesting sizes, I have them in regular shapes. Then neat stuff like hearts, ghosts and snowflakes. Many more, but you get it:) I think my favorite are the nesting cupcake cutters.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what my favorite is, but I would say that the egg is incredibly versatile but often forgotten. These have always just killed me: http://www.flickr.com/photos/montrealcookies/5635409533/.
ReplyDeleteI'm obsessed with cookie cutters!!! I store mine in picture boxes. I have multiple themed boxes for Halloween, Autumn, and Christmas (Hobby Lobby for cheeeap! especially when they've 1/2 off!) and then just some plain cute boxes that live in my china hutch all year round with my "everyday" shapes!!
ReplyDeletecut it with a ruler!?! obviously he didn't know how many cookies one usually needs to make! :) that is pretty funny. This is a great resource for my baking-tool shopping binges. :)
ReplyDeleteLuv ur collection...my fav is my Christmas collection...
ReplyDeleteThis post came at the perfect time. I'm planning on spending some time watching the University of Cookie videos this weekend and practicing. Was going to bake and freeze a bunch of cookies tomorrow to practice on. I have a wonderful store called ABC Cake Decorating store that is here in Phoenix and they have tons of cookie cutters. Time to do some shopping! Thanks Bridget!
ReplyDeleteThe lower grade may also be a bit heavier and you really need to seal them to prevent liquid seepage. If you are looking for discount countertops, lower grade granite is one of your best alternatives.
ReplyDeleteDarling Husband of Mine: "Now, why do you NEED heart cutters in *6* different sizes? Can't you just use...I dunno...maybe 2?"
ReplyDeleteMe (hyperventilating and clutching my heart): "Why do you need Allen-keys (or screwdrivers or steel files or computer cables, for that matter!) in *6* different sizes? Can't you just use...I dunno...maybe 2?"
I took a round cookie cutter and "transformed" it into green eggs and ham for Dr. Seuss' birthday. I made the eggs first and then "worked" on the cutter and came up with the perfect ham. I've got pictures on my blog from last year. I used your cookie dough recipe. It worked out great!
ReplyDeleteNot sure how high quality these are from amazon (they look pretty excellente), but I found this cutters that are plain square on one side and scalloped on the opposite side - two sets for the price of one :)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.amazon.com/Ateco-6-Piece-Double-Square-Cutter/dp/B001V5Y2YI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1326864208&sr=8-2
These are so cute! I love the list on where to find cookie cutters - good ones are hard to find. I am just beginning my little collection and I need help!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, I love ALL of my cutters. (I may have a problem.) But if I had to choose, I would guess that my nested circles and the bracket square cutter are my favorites. Because those NEVER get put away.
ReplyDeleteAnd I REALLY, REALLY want a rectangle cutter now. I have been using.... a ruler and a pizza cutter for way too long!
I would say you nailed the topic on the head... when will the cookie cutter collection end??
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this post! I would love to venture into the world of baking/decorating cookies. I'm going to check around your Blog to see if you have posts for those of us just starting out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great tip! Good to know which cutters are must haves.
ReplyDeleteI looked all over for scalloped square cookie cutters and FINALLY found a set on Amazon. The brand is R&M, and it's a set of four graduated sizes.
ReplyDeleteI have yet to get a candy corn cookie cutter! Two companies I know of make the square cutter, both plain and fluted. Fox Run and R&M and both can be found on Amazon and at Golda's Kitchen (ships worldwide).
ReplyDeleteAmazon has a double-sided square cutter collection right now--scalloped on one side, smooth on the other, in six sizes.
ReplyDeleteHave I ever told you how much I ADORE your Wednesday posts? Seriously, you have the best info ever.
ReplyDeleteI love those scalloped cutters...need to buy a few!!
I have a cookie cutter collection, but I wanted to know if you ever make your own designs by cutting it out on paper and then on the dough. If so, what's the best way to cut the dough...I've been wanting to try but a little intimidated.
ReplyDeletewww.lifeofamodernhousewife.com
my collection is getting crazy too....i like getting some of mine at karenscookies.net. the customer service is great...
ReplyDeleteI love this post! It's fun to see your favorites. But I'll bet I'm not the only one who'd like to also see that guest room closet:)
ReplyDeleteI use my star cookie cutter the most--comes in handy for the Fourth of July, Space themes, birthdays or "you're a star" messages. I even used it to top some "Miss America" themed cupcakes the other day!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to search for a square/rectangle cookie cutter, it sounds so versatile!
LOVE this! Thanks for the tips! I have some really good ones for fall (maple leaf and pumpkin) and the holiday ones that I posted for my holiday cookies (that you commented on and I almost peed my pants with excitement that someone of your caliber would even look at my blog!) :) Question--where do you store your cookie cutters? I have them in ziploc bags now and it works alright but I wish they worked better (like were more organized) ok that's all! you can respond here or tweet me the answer at @orderinthekitch if you have time! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI really like my Drommar Animal cookie cutters from IKEA. They have realistic looking bear, moose, porcupine, snail, squirrel, and fox. My boys really like them too!
ReplyDeleteI found a round scalloped cookie cutter in a vintagey cream color, a few years ago in a vintage shop and I always use it! It makes great scones!
ReplyDeleteIt's like picking a favorite child...
ReplyDeleteI like all of my Wilton Comfort Grip cutters the best. My must haves: house, circle, flower, gingerbread man.
I love the heart and scrabble piece cookies! How sweet.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite cookie cutter is my copper Daschund from Sur la Table :)
ReplyDeleteWorks for me Wednesday is one of my favorites! I had your Amazon shop on my Christmas list, but I think my family thought I was kidding. (When on earth would she have the time to use it?) Now, I'm adding your cookie cutter suggestions to my birthday list. Family, I am not kidding! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great post. I am just starting out on a cookie making adventure, so I don't have many cutters - your post helps a lot!
ReplyDeletei have no cookie cutters! but my grandmother holds the motherlode...she has about every shape imaginable...flowers, animals, cars...
ReplyDeleteAnyone have tips for cleaning cookie cutters after they have gotten rust on them? I try to wash my cutters right away in hot, soapy water, then I put them on a cooling rack in my oven after I have turned it off but it is still a bit warm. But they sometimes still get rusty. Any ideas other than buying all new copper cutters? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Bridget! Lately I'm loving my simple, round, small cutters for simple, round small cookies:) Very vesatile!
ReplyDeletei only ever use simple shapes, but then my cookie baking is not at your level by far. i got a set of squares and circles thru amazon - one side ruffled, the other smooth. "works for me!"
ReplyDeleteWalmart has a square scalloped cutter!! It is part of a two-cutter Valentine set (a heart with wings is the other cutter) that sells for $1.88! I have one regular square, but it is so BIG. This cutter is perfect. So excited to see it, espcially with this post on my brain!
ReplyDeleteI laughed when I pulled down my mom's basket of cookie cutters this past holiday; it was much bigger than the last time I made cookies with her. And my own collection seemed tiny, though I did pick up a dozen or so over the holidays at a craft store for 60 cents apiece. (Better than the $2-$5 I'd pay for them in my town, and a better selection.)
ReplyDeleteWow! I wish i had a collection like this. I have a heart set that i use all the time, i love hearts!
ReplyDeleteI have alot, but there is one I saw in a magazine several years ago, and cannot forget it. It was a sheep, with a scallop edge for the wool and then there was a face that was cut separately and sat right down on the wool. It was so darn cute. i would try to imitate it but I just don't have the talent. Has anyone ever seen that somewhere?Candy
ReplyDeleteHow do you spend Christmas?
