AmeriColor Super Red & Super Black gel paste food colorings.
Yep, that's it.
No adding cherry juice to red icing. No mixing of every color in your arsenal to make black. No stirring 2 containers of red food coloring into icing and still winding up with pink. (When I first started decorating cookies, I tried it all.)
Oh, did I mention these have no yucky aftertaste like some other colors?
You can find it many places online: Bake It Pretty, Layer Cake Shop, Sweet Baking Supply, Copper Gifts and, of course, Amazon. If you have a bakery supply store in your town, I bet they'll have it, too. I almost forgot...Hobby Lobby!!!
Making red & black icing the easy way...works for me!
Good tip :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I totally need to buy a couple bottles of these.
ReplyDeleteYou mentioned that it doesn't take a lot to color red or black using the Super gels.... How much do you use? A few drops? A tsp? THANKS!
Hey Betsy...I don't measure because I'm always making different amounts (dividing the colors for different designs). Start with a few squeezes of the gel and then add from there. :)
DeleteAwesome tips, as always!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips! I use americolor and love it.
ReplyDeleteRecently I made dalmations and I used americolor black and did the spots on the white and when it dried the black spots ran and turned green/yellow around the edges... Any tips on getting your black not to run or change colors like that. (I am new to decorating so this may be a silly question.) By the way I did wet on wet so the spots would be flush with the white icing. Thanks so much!!
Hey there!
DeleteHere are some tips to prevent bleeding. I think the most imposrtant one is not to over-saturate your icing with color.

*important*
DeleteThey still taste awful if you end up using a lot...and it takes A LOT to color fondant red or black :/ not as bad as wiilton, but still frustrating. And yeah, both red and black colors bleed horribly! Still love americolor, just hate those two colors!
ReplyDeleteI don't notice a taste from these as all. Here are some tips for preventing bleeding...

I find I am very sensitive to the bitter red taste, much more so than most people. The super red is beautiful, but still tastes bad to me. Sweet Sugar Belle uses tulip red and says that is no taste. I tried it and really didn't taste it, but it is a very orangey red. I did have good luck using mostly tulip red and then a little super red to tone down the orange. Unfortunately though I did seem to need more tulip red to reach the same depth of color as opposed to super red.

Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog. You are so inspiring.
ReplyDeleteLove the super colors...I have had so many bad black experiences..this is the only way :)
ReplyDeleteI agree. I bought the black recently for some Ninjago cupcakes I made for my son and they worked really well, though I only needed a small amount. I was thinking I should've bought white as well!
ReplyDeleteLove the tips, thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteWe would use these to dye fondant too!
ReplyDeleteThose colors are simply the best! If I'm coloring a buttercream type of frosting black, I try to start with chocolate frosting ... it doesn't seem to require as much black coloring ;)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love the Batman cookies!!! Thanks for sharing these super fun ideas. ~~ Have a great day, Sharon & Denise
ReplyDeleteI had nearly this same question today when I was at JoAnn getting icing colors-- and wouldn't you know I picked up your book (already have a copy at home) in the aisle to see what you would suggest for black icing? I didn't notice this brand of coloring at their store but will take a closer look next time. Thanks for the great advice!
ReplyDeleteJoAnn doesn't carry that brand....Hobby Lobby does, though. And if you don't have a HL, you can find it really easily online. :)
DeleteOh, and yay for seeing the book there!
I am a true believer in AmeriColor - it takes so much less to color to a better deepness!
ReplyDeletesigned,
Used To Have Pink Frosting (not red)
Sorry if this is a silly question but I am new to cookie decorating...but am truly loving it. Will the black and red icing "dye" the cookie eaters mouth and teeth? I once ordered a Scooby Doo cake for my son's kindergarten class and had to run out the door when all the children had black and purple mouths :-) Thanks for your help...Kim
ReplyDeleteNot a silly question! Since royal icing dries hard, it won't get all over your lips like buttercream. It may color your tongue a bit, though. :)
DeleteAfter a bad black spotting on my red Valentines cookies last year Red scares me! LOL Thank goodness it was a customer who always orders cookies so knew something wasn't right. It's only happened once but now I only do pink for Valentine's. Americolour is the best red out there though.
ReplyDeleteSo excited to find Americolor maroon and navy blue now too!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE THESE FOOD COLORINGS. I used a combination of the red, pink, peach, and orange to achieve the perfect color to match bridesmaids dresses for cookies I made for a friend's wedding reception. :-)
ReplyDeleteUseful tips! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHey Bridget! You saved the day by mentioning they carry these at HobbyLobby! My city does not have a baking supply shop at all. I have a Minnie Mouse birthday cake to make this weekend and forgot to order SuperBlack in time. I was lamenting having to go through a whole jar of that "other" coloring to get a true black for Minnie. I hadn't even THOUGHT about HobbyLobby! (We haven't had one for very long). Baker's luck! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of AmeriColor until I started reading your blog about a year ago. Not being a professional or particularly talented (unlike you) cookie/cake decorator, I stored away the name but didn't think that it could be all that different from other food coloring. My local cake decorating store doesn't carry it and even told me there was no way to make intense colors in icing that tastes good. Then I discovered that I can buy AmeriColor at Hobby Lobby. Last week I made a neon polka dot (inside) cake with neon rainbow frosting for my daughters birthday using AmeriColor. The colors were gorgeous, intense and flavorless! Thank you, Briget for sharing your decorating knowledge! I am in awe of your cookies and have learned so much from your blog!
ReplyDeleteYay!
