Sweet on Trader Joe's Saturday: Brownie Truffle Baking Mix

Time to review a little something new this week...one of Trader Joe's baking mixes.
trader joe's truffle brownie mix ... yay or nay?
We've never tried a TJ's baking mix before, but I always think it's a good idea to have a brownie mix in the pantry for emergencies.

Trader Joe's Brownie Truffle Baking Mix makes an 8x8" pan of brownies.  The mix is made with Dutch cocoa and chocolate chips, and the box costs $2.99.

The brownies are easy to mix up, just add eggs and melted butter.

A mom's (my) take: It's hard to make a bad brownie...and these are not bad at all, just not my favorite.  The brownies came out really dry around the edges and on the top.  I like a fudgy, shiny-topped brownie.  (The instructions were very specific about using a toothpick to test for doneness in "several locations." I don't normally do this with brownies, especially ones with chocolate chips like these. I think this is why they came out a bit dry.)  The center was tasty, but I ended up tossing the dry edges.  This mix won't be the one I keep in my pantry for dessert emergencies.
Overall rating: 3 of 5 stars

A teenager's (kiddo's) take: Like my mom, I prefer a chewier, softer brownie. However, these brownies are amazing if you are a "dry brownie" person. The chocolate is actually very rich and flavorful, even though the brownies themselves are a bit dry.
Overall rating: 4 out of 5 stars

  1. I always wondered if the TJ Brownie mix was any good. Thanks for setting me straight!

  2. Love your honest reviews..There are so many nice products at TJ's..bound to have some not a perfect 5..
So easy to make at home w/out a mix and so good..
My daughter loves the Ghirardelli mix though at Costco..:)

  3. I felt the same way when I baked these. I tried one of their recipes on their website -- use their peanutbutter cups in both dark and milk chocolate. When the brownies come out of the oven, spread a little of both PB cups on the top of the hot brownie. Spread. It makes a heavenly "icing".

  4. You must try the pumpkin bread when it comes back for the season. Oh! Yum! Moist and flavorful...oh, wait, this is about brownies. Thanks for your review. It is so helpful when you know where not to spend your money at TJ. And, Ghiradelli IS the next best thing to homemade!

  5. Hi there, just like to say i love your blog and your recipes.

As a fellow food blogger, i was wondering whether you would be at all interested in entering my blog's recipe competition? On Chef Mel's Kitchen (http://chef-mels-kitchen.blogspot.co.uk/). You just have to follow my blog and email a recipe to be in with a chance to win the prize! Thanks very much,

  6. This is actually my favorite brownie mix. I would say they are more cakey than fudgey, but I've never had a problem with them being too dry. I would suggest trying them one more time and taking them out of the oven a little sooner (for what it's worth, I've never bothered with the toothpick test, either!).

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! If you have a recipe question, please reach out on twitter or instagram. :)
