Sweet on Trader Joe's: Dark Chocolate Covered Ginger

trader joe's dark chocolate covered ginger review

Our Trader Joe's review this round is of TJ's Dark Chocolate Covered Ginger. It's no secret that I'm a fan of crystallized ginger - find it in these recipes: chocolate ginger cookies, pecan streusel sweet potato casserole, ginger carrot bread, and ginger ale bundt cake. Yep, I love it.

Trader Joe's Chocolate Covered Ginger is little nuggets of crystallized ginger enrobed with dark chocolate. Simple. They come in a 12-ounce tub and cost $4.49.

She said: These make my ginger-loving heart happy. Spicy and sweet...these aren't chocolates you can pop mindlessly; the ginger is fiery and demands that each bite be savored. The nuggets are a variety of sizes, so choose just how much ginger you can handle. I imagined the chocolate would be a bit softer, but the flavor is spot-on.

He (Jack) said: A unique flavor experience awaits! Once you bite into one, the fruity and sugary-sweet notes of the ginger come out first, followed by its spiciness. However, it's not too intense, and pretty soon the chocolate eclipses anything that's left of the ginger. Also, even though it's "dark," the chocolate doesn't really taste dark, probably because of whatever the ginger does to your taste buds--so the bitterness of the cocoa isn't there at all. Very easy to eat a ton all at once, but beware ginger overload!

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
