Sweet on Trader Joe's: Dairy-Free Mini Frozen Dessert Cones

Sweet on Trader Joe's: Dairy-Free Mini Frozen Dessert Cones

The name of this Trader Joe's product is quite the mouthful this week! While I was going to call them "Mini Dairy-Free Hold the Cones," the package title is "Hold the Dairy! Mini Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Cones, Chocolate." WHEW.

Anyhoo...we're reviewing them today no matter what they're called.

First things first. Have you visited our new Sweet on Trader Joe's site? It's alllllllll Trader Joe's reviews all the time. And as always...We have no affiliation with Trader Joe's. I feel sure they have never read this blog and have no idea who we are. Hey, we like being incognito! These Trader Joe's reviews are just for us - and for YOU, our fellow Trader Joe's lovers!

Now, these dairy-free ice cream cones must be a hot commodity because there were literally TWO boxes in the freezer when I was in the store. One is the one you see here...a dented box. The other one was actually open. I think it must have looked like a Black Friday frenzy when these were brought out.

Trader Joe's Hold the Dairy! Mini Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Cones come 12 to a box and cost $3.99. In addition to being dairy-free, they're also vegan.

The calories and sugar per serving threw me a bit as it seemed high - until I realized those numbers are for a serving size of SIX! One or two cones seem a little more reasonable, but I appreciate Trader Joe's overestimating the portions.

She (Bridget) says: I love that TJ's is offering a dairy-free version of their Hold the Cones! The consistency of the dairy-free "ice cream" is more mousse-like than creamy. While this is made with coconut milk, I don't taste coconut - just chocolate. The cone has a nice, soft crunch...not soggy, not too crispy. Just like originals, the bottom of the cones are filled with chocolate. I like that little touch. Not as great as the ice cream version, but pretty darn yummy.

Overall rating: 4 of 5 stars

He (Mr. E) says: Unwrapping this little treat is a treat. I like the little tab on the foil wrapper, so you don’t have to fumble as you peel. But on to the good stuff inside. Without reading the box, I couldn’t really tell this was non-dairy. Like the original Hold the Cone, these are smooth. They’re not packed with flavor but are fine for those with a mild sweet tooth. You may need 2-3 of them if you’re like me; I'd love a larger size.

Trader Joe's Hold the Dairy! Mini Coconut Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert Cones: If you don't need dairy-free, maybe stick to the original Hold the Cone options. If you're looking for a dairy-free or vegan frozen dessert, these are a great treat!
