April Fool's Day FOOD

For some reason, we never really celebrated April Fool's Day until a few years ago.  Now we're having the best time with our "funny food."

This year, I'm serving "sundaes" for dinner....

Kiddo is going to be so disappointed when he realizes we are not having ice cream for dinner, but that it is, in fact, mashed potatoes and gravy.

{To make things super easy, we're using instant mashed potatoes and jarred gravy.  I know, I know...not the healthiest, but I won't tell if you won't.}

And how cute is that "cherry?"  I was SO excited to find that jar of Peppadew peppers at the grocery store! I might have squealed.

Here are a few blasts from April Fool's past:

Mashed Potato Cupcakes...

{I think these are my favorite.}

Meatloaf Cupcakes (yes, those are meat cakes, my friends)...

Spaghetti & Meatball Cupcakes...

I also love these ideas and am filing them away for next year:

Macaron "sliders" from One Vanilla Bean
"Grilled Cheese" from Family Fun (will be in kiddo's lunchbox tomorrow)
Candy-filled Fruit Cup from Come Together Kids
"Lasagna" from Food Network
Candy Sushi from La Casserole Carree (in French, oo-la-la)
Ducky Punch (not an April Fool's post, but I still think it would be great) from TidyMom
"Fakin' and Eggs" from Making Memories (sold by the name alone!)

Do you have any April Fool's FOOD ideas?  I wanna hear 'em.

  2. Would you believe THIS is my favorite part of April's Fool? Seeing what you're coming up with each year? Yeah, I need a life :)

  9. What a fantastic idea! My brother's birthday is tomorrow and we always have a blast tricking him in any way possible. I just might have to do one of these desserts as well.

  10. Not quite of the same vein...but sometimes I save a bit of gingerbread cookie dough from Christmas (put it in the freezer). I thaw it out and roll it to look like dog business and prank people with it.

I put it in my FIL's slipper one year. Got him good! :D But I also got the cat in trouble. Oops, sorry kitty!

  13. That looks so funny! I hate mashed potatoes and gravy, so I'm glad I'm not at your house for 'dessert' tomorrow!

  14. Such fun! I love the savory tricky sundae :)

Tomorrow on my blog I'm posting pound cake "fries" with raspberry "ketchup"...it was delicious!

  15. Love it! Love your blog too :-) My fav for April Fools is "grilled cheese". Toasted pound cake slices filled with orange frosting!

  16. Perfect! I've been trying to figure out what to do tomorrow. Last year it was shepherd's pie "cupcakes" (with the mashed potato icing tinted different colours) and pound cake and icing "sandwiches". My kids were furious with me. Tears. (Two of them hate shepherd's pie though, so I had it coming).

This year, I was drawing a blank. I plan on Sausage and Egg "Burgers" for breakfast and thought of doing the meals backwards, but nothing was exciting for supper. After going through my blogs I was going to start Googling! You saved me the time. Love the creativity and ideas!

  19. We did the meatloaf cupcakes and grilled pound cake with frosting cheese for dinner last April Fool's day. I also made jello in clear-ish plastic cups for their drink.

This year will be meatloaf cake and your mashed potato sundaes, and pound cake with an "egg" on top (marshmallow creme white with an apricot half for the yolk).

I'm only a little worried about what joke they will play on me :)

  21. Hah! This is awesome!

Twisted as I may be, I've never considered anything like this for April Fool's.

I have, however, made a "torted cake" from meatloaf, frosted with mashed cauliflower once. Ah, low carbbing!

  22. Those are AWESOME! What a great April Fool's Day idea. Well at least it will still be delicious even if it is a gear shift from the expected dessert treat.

  25. Oh My Goodness!
That is some LOVE in a SUNDAE glass!
I would 1000 times rather have me a MASHED potato Sundae than ice cream!
And I'd like mine with those MEAT~LOAF cupcakes! ;o)
You are a HOOT...a JOY...a DELIGHT...a MAGICAL slice of all things GOOD!
    I adore you!
    LOVE these taters! xo
And that little RED pepper on top...is SO BRIDGET! xo

  26. HAHAHA, I made Bernie eggs! Deviled and fried! He hates eggs, LOL...they were cookies. I am making the taters and gravy for the kids they will get such a kick!

  27. Very creative...love the sundae!

  28. How fun is that!!! I remember seeing a post on a meal planning blog that was a total April Fool's Day joke. It was the nastiest food I had ever seen. I wonder where that was....

    ReplyDelete
  29. Every holiday is amp-ed up these days, aren't they? And what fun we get to have with the different "themes." My favorite trick food was fries with ketchup made with toasted sliced pound cake and little cups of red frosting for dipping.

  30. So much fun! I wish I had thought to do something like this... I will have to file this away for next year!

  31. That is a great idea! At first glance I wouldn't have realized what it was if you hadn't put the caption on the photo.

  32. It looks so sweet. I'd love to see the look on your son's face when he tries it:) Finding the "cherry" made it perfect!

  33. These are fun, but I think I'm going to have to pass on the meatloaf cupcakes! Mashed potato bars at parties are all the rage here--usually served in martini glasses. I left a link in my post today to you. Used the darling cupcake liners you sent ages ago! Thanks again!

  42. I have a daughter with an April Fool's birthday, and we did Bakerella's hamburger and french fries last year. About to take them to a new school to fool another class this year. They are a HUGE hit and as easy as squirting ketchup on a hamburger.

  43. these cupcakes are the cutest things ever!! love them!

  44. These are such awesome ideas!!! LOVE them!

  46. That's exactly how I like to eat mashed potatoes when I was a kid! Mashed potatoes for my sunday brunch! I don't feel alone anymore!

  54. This was my first year doing something fun and creative for April Fools and my family LOVED it. I made a catbox cake complete with scoop and chocolate fondant poop. It was fantastic and my kids had a great time eating it...once they were completely convinced it wasn't real, of course! :)

  55. So pleasing to the eyes and definitely pleasing to taste. Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  56. What a fun idea! I'll definitely have to try to keep this to myself to do next year. My sister once made for me a white cake that was actually orange with purple icing, but that wasn't half as cute as mashed potato sundaes. For a minute I thought you were seriously going to use potatoes as an ingredient for homemade icecream!

  63. Comfort foods remind you of safe times, warm feelings and good memories. You eat them when you are vulnerable and need those feelings. Don't change your baked comfort food recipes to ones lower in calories and/or fat, because they then become diet foods and take on an entirely new meaning.

  73. Did you know that healthcare expenses in India account for 4.1% of national GDP? In addition, private spending on healthcare (which means costs that the government will not bear) increases up to 70.8% of all country's health expenditure, according to The Guardian. The alternative then for the common people is quite simple - investing in a small amount supplements preventive health checkups (which could be totally covered by your insurance) than shelling out large amounts during health crises.
