{These cookies were for our instructor, who was a riot, and who was very patient with slow learners.}
We decided that we have spent too much of our lives in Texas and Oklahoma to NOT be able to 2-step.
And speaking of which, Mr. E went to elementary school in California where he did not have the horror of square-dancing in PE. In Texas, I guess it's required learning. The 2-step really would have been more helpful.
{pictures from our first class...some of the 168 or so taken by kiddo.}
Anyway, here's what we learned in dance class...
- there is a two-step and a TEXAS 2-step...and that other dance, the one with the shuffling, that's not a 2-step at all. That's the polka. (The polka!)
- we learned the regular 2-step and two TURNS! (That made me feel very glamorous.)
- we need practice.
- the two most fear-inducing words in the English language, "change partners."
The cookies: I've made boot cookies before, here and here, but I changed them up just a bit this time.
You will need:
- cowboy boot cookies
- royal icing tinted with AmeriColor
warm brown, chocolate brown and grey
- disposable icing bags
- couplers
- icing tips: #2, #1
- squeeze bottles (2)
- silver luster dust
- vodka
- small paintbrush
- small ramekin
Using a #2 tip, outline the cookie with chocolate brown icing. Reserve some of this piping consistency icing.
Thin the chocolate and warm brown icing to the consistency of a thick syrup. Cover with a damp dish towel and let sit for several minutes. Stir gently with a silicone spatula before transferring to a squeeze bottle.
Fill in the heel and top section of the boot with chocolate brown icing.
Fill in the main part of the boot with warm brown icing.
Wait 1 hour before adding the details.
Using a #2 tip, pipe a spur and star detail with grey icing.
Using a #2 tip, add the details in chocolate brown.
Let the cookies dry overnight.
Mix 1/4 teaspoon silver luster dust with several drops of vodka. Brush on the spur and star. The alcohol will quickly evaporate, so add more vodka to the mixture as needed.
I'm thinking that if we sign up for the intermediate class, I should bring these along every week as peace offerings for all those toes I step on during the whole "change partners" ordeal. Cookies make up for squished toes, right?
Have you ever taken a dance class as an adult?
i love everything about these. my husband would be so excited if i made them! too bad i have zero patience...
ReplyDeleteHow cool is the dancing!!
ReplyDeleteThe cookies are pretty nifty too !
You are amazing!
ReplyDeleteHi Bridget. Cookies more than make up for squished toes. However I have to admit that the thought of "changing partners" is enough to keep me off the dance floor completely!
ReplyDeleteYour cookies are fabulous, as usual. I'm wondering -- do you ever make the sugar cookies in advance and then freeze them until you're ready to decorate them? And also, is luster dust the same thing as edible glitter? I've seen an item called "Disco Dust" on one of the baking sites you recommend, and couldn't tell for sure. Thanks!
I took C&W Dance for a kinesiology credit at Texas A&M [several] years ago ... it was one of my favorite classes in college. LOL. My fave was the jitterbug.
ReplyDeleteLovin' the luster dust spurs -- perfect!
My husband and I take Salsa dance lessons here in Orlando and I really don't like the "change partners" time either. I'd like to learn to dance better with my man!
ReplyDeleteSo fun! And don't y'all just look like the cutest 2-stepping couple ever!
ReplyDeleteThe cookies are cute too. ; )
Stinkin' adorable.
ReplyDelete...The cookies ain't bad neither ;)
I hope you just imagined my best John Wayne impersonation.
Super Cute's!!
ReplyDeleteLove them!!
I live in California and we did have to take square dancing in PE!! I think changing partners is even more terrifying in middle school and high school if you hate PE and are as uncoordinated as I am ;)
ReplyDeleteYour cookies are gorgeous, as always!
Hahahaha....I just do not feel its fair to not have to live through the torture of square dancing classes. Mine were in sixth grade...as if we were not akward and self concious enough. Anyway, great boots...I love boot cookies...AnD cutest pics ever. Good job Jack!!!
ReplyDeleteWhere did you get your adorable shirt?!
ReplyDeleteI love these!!! and you two look so cute out there on the floor! And that whole change partners things would totally have sent me running for the hills.
ReplyDeleteThat is just not right you had to take lessons for this?! ha! It's about time. I think I was born knowing how to 2 step:-) Guess you never took road trips in college to Tumbleweeds in Stillwater. Shame shame. :-)
ReplyDeleteLove the boots!
Ok you two cuties made me smile this morning! How adorable are you guys! Steve and I took line dancing years ago, but two stepping is hard for us with our height difference.
ReplyDeleteMissing you even more now!
I grew up in Maryland and we had to do square dancing, smack dab in the middle of pubescent weirdness. It was awful.
ReplyDeleteAmy @ A Little Nosh
Such a "SWEET" post in so many ways!!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the boots - not sure when I'll get a chance to make them in So. Cal...but also LOVED The pictures, and totally see Kiddo in Mr. E. He's like mini-mr. E. Fun post, adorable family. And how cool that kiddo watched his parents take dance class, he'll be such a good husband one day. :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love it! I love country dancing! But I didn't love the square dancing in 6th grade...ugh! Cute boots!! :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like great fun! My hubby and I also took C&W dance lessons years ago. In college, I even had square dancing for one of my PE's.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! It's Kiddo, but older!
ReplyDeleteCuteness! Love them!
ReplyDeleteI have taken dance classes as an adult—swing dancing, too much fun!
Really cute!
ReplyDeleteThese boot cookies are the best I have ever see, they are awesome, and the pictures of you dancing are so cool, too!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute!, I mean what a sweet couple.
ReplyDeleteYou look amazing. I took a class myself at college, not that I remember anything but it was fun. Enjoy every minute.
Love the cookies, seen them on FB I finally stopped by to say hello!!!
THAT is awesome! And so are the cookies.
ReplyDeleteI've always wondered about taking couples dance lessons. It seems like such a fun productive extracurricular :) And as always, these cookies are so clever.
ReplyDeleteLove the boots! And yes cookies make EVERYTHING better. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am working at a large dance company and just started taking tap dancing at the ripe old age of 48.
Yee gods it's tough! I am not used to being on the balls of me feet...tap dancing cookies would make my tootsies feel better!
Thanks for sharing the photos and the cookies.
Janet
I made western boots this week too!!! I love yours!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I want to take dance classes with my husband now too. So glad to finally see some pictures of your other half, you two are so cute together.
ReplyDeleteLOVE THESE BOOT COOKIES!! I didn't dance as child but always wanted to. A couple of years ago I took and adult tap class with some other mom friends. It was so much fun. It's never too late to try something new.
ReplyDeleteCute cookies!!! And I grew up in Utah and we had square dancing in PE. I think it was in 4th grade. :-)
ReplyDeleteThe cookies are cut but not as cute as you and Mr. E out on the dance floor. So sweet! Kiddo looks just like him!
ReplyDeleteY'all are Too Cute! The cookies look wonderful!
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend!
We had to square dance in Illinois too. 4th grade gym class was very traumatic. There were also climbing ropes. (shudder).
ReplyDeleteYou guys are such a cute couple and what cute cookies for a lucky instructor.
Too cute to eat ... well maybe not - I know they are delicious.
ReplyDeleteHave fun doing the two step!
Bridget you guys are sooooo cute! As are these bootalicious cookies.
ReplyDeleteYou two are adorable! I don't know where in Ca your teacher is from but I had to take square dancing in 9th grade. I went to an all girl's high school, so we were dancing with each other. Equal embarrising as one of had to be the leader and follower.
ReplyDeleteI take dance lessons now as a much older adult with my boyfried. We LOVE it! Haven't tried Texas Two Step but have learned how to fox trot which is from what I hear, TTS backwards or something similar.
Try some east coast swing. Loads of fun dancing to the oldies! My current favorite is West Coast Swing. A little bit harder but oh, so much fun! Follower can take the lead in that dance!
So am up at 3:30 in the morning so I can get the house clean before going to dance class later this morning. Also had to check in on your wonderful blog to get my fill of your fabulous cookies for the day!
P.S. I like changing partners most of the time. As long as they use breath mints after eating garlic! Helps me to become a better dancer! Or a better actress if they don't use a breath mint!
Love that your hubby was willing to take a dance class with you. I dragged my husband to a Polynesian dance class (I'm Hawaiian) where he ended up being the only man. Such good men we have.
ReplyDeleteyay you country dancers!! I want to go dancin' there is a country Dance Hall here I just can't wait to visit some night :) You may have inspired me... just wait till I tell my husband :)
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to learn something new! Think how much fun you two can have now! (Besides - you two are so cute!!)
ReplyDeleteAnd then there are the boot cookies - adorable!! (as are all of your cookies!) I am in AWE!
What!!! I went to elementary school here is southern California and we TOTALLY had swear dancing in PE!!! We also had square dancing in junior high-which is also known as torture.....
ReplyDeleteokay that was supposed to say square dancing....
ReplyDeleteI think.
We learned to square dance in music class (!?) in fifth grade. I live in Arkansas, so it still seemed appropriate. I remember I loved it! Besides our class had 18 boys and only 9 girls, so we girls never had to worry too much about having a terrible partner. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to talk my husband into taking ballroom dancing classes. He says he wants to do that, but hasn't made a move towards a class yet. *lol*
Cute cookies!
B--you two are just ADORABLE!! Loved this post. And your hair looks amazing!!
ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in Oklahoma and so was my hubby and we don't know how to two step either. :) Though we did have to square dance in gym.
ReplyDeleteWhen one of my best friends got married, they had a dance instructor at their rehearsal dinner so we got a lesson then. One thing I learned is that I like to lead and that is bad when you are a girl. ;)
Oh that looks neat, my husband and I took dance lessons to learn to waltz before our wedding but I can't remember a thing. In Australia we also had square dancing in PE. I kinda thought it was fun :) Cute boot cookies.
ReplyDeleteThese are seriously too cute! I feel like throwing a barn yard dancing party just to make these.
ReplyDeleteOh, I love it! You and Mr. E looks SO cute together!
ReplyDeleteThe cookies are pretty awesome too! =)
OH my gosh!!!! You two are so cute its killin me!!! I lovelovelove it. I want MORE pictures like this... Ok thats it. You MUST start posting about your life more. I dare say, I find you and your family just as fascinating as your cookies. You are all ADORABLE!!!!
ReplyDeletewhat a cute post! look forward to seeing more here. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Bridget, it's Sue from Ireland, I emailed you a few months ago.
ReplyDeleteThe cookies look great, the dance class looked so much fun. And my goodness, doesn't Kiddo look like his Dad?
Well done!
Sue
Beautiful cookies!!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I took ballroom dancing before our wedding. It was so much fun - we should look into it again. Thanks for the memory, Bridget!
What cute cookies! I love the detail of the spurs!
ReplyDeleteI went to college in Arkansas, and an organization I was involved with frequently had barn dances where we learned to two-step. However, my boyfriend does not know how, so it has been really funny trying to teach him. So fun, though!
I went to school in California and *did* have to square dance. I think your husband just got lucky. I actually sort of liked it--I think I just liked dancing with the boys.
ReplyDeleteDavid and I have fond memories of learning how to 2-step in the old Student Center at St. Mary's in College Station. That old building leaked so badly, we had to not only learn how to turn, but avoid all the empty pots and pans pulled from the kitchen to catch all the drips from the ceiling!
ReplyDeleteBut yes, I say cookies are definitely good to take to dance class, even if you didn't squish any toes. You probably danced all the calories off, right? ;-)
Haven't taken dance classes since I was younger, but yes, I had to learn country dancing in PE class too!! Hahaha, I remember learning the Cotton Eye Joe especially!
ReplyDeleteOMG!

Square dancing was definitely a requirement in Alabama along with dodge ball!
ReplyDeleteThose cowboy cookies and 2 steppin make me miss TX.
Cute! You guys and the cookies. Great pictures J!
ReplyDeleteOh Lordy.. I remember PE mandated square dancing! Beautiful cookies and beautiful blog!

ReplyDeleteLinking back to the FAB cookies in my post tomorrow :)
ReplyDeleteThey look fantastic, but if I do it together with my kids, I will have to book a carpet cleaning Cheam.
ReplyDeleteSo cute! Justin got us private dance lessons for our anniversary. We took salsa lessons, and it was a blast. Both of us were happy to not have an audience for our many missteps.
ReplyDeleteYour blouse is so romantic! The ruffle at the neckline, the flounce at the elbows, the nip in at the waistline, and the beautiful fabric. If I saw it in a store, I'd be tempted to buy two, just in case something happened to one of them. Glad you had fun!
Hello friends, I want to share this video of cowboys peru, I want to be your total satisfaction
