Desserts for Dudes month continues with Cute as a Button cookies
...because dudes have to start somewhere!
When our little dude was born, he decided to make an entrance. An unexpected entrance via emergency c-section, 10 weeks early. He weighed 2 pounds, 13 ounces.
{Kiddo is now 11 years old and 5 feet tall....wearing the same size shoe as his mother...}

Supplies for the buttons:

- fondant
- AmeriColor Sky Blue Soft Gel Paste Food Color
- bench scraper

- tips: Wilton 4B, and #1 or #2 plain tips
- cornstarch
- rolling pin
- toothpicks
- chopstick
Dust the surface and rolling pin with cornstarch to prevent sticking, a tip Buddy gave us, and roll the fondant thin, maybe 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch. Use a bench scraper to lift the fondant off the counter if necessary.

{PS...I'm not going to quit blogging to be a hand model anytime soon.}

{Seriously, what are those holes called? A button hole is something you push your button through. There must be a name of the holes in the middle of a button. Anyone? Anyone?}

{Again...no hand modeling.}

For the cookies:
- Outline & flood the cookies with royal icing and let dry overnight.
- Pipe the dots around the border.
- With an AmeriColor Gourmet Writer Food Decorator Pen , add the wording. (AmeriColor pens are much better than the ones as the grocery store!)
- Attach the buttons with a bit of royal icing.
- Let dry several hours.

It's funny. When I first saw these sweet things, I assumed you had a cutter for them. But nope. You made them by hand. With things that I own. Now if only I had a reason to make cookies or cakes with buttons on them...

ReplyDeleteNow this is cute on a cookie if I've ever seen it! The button is just the sweetest touch. You are like an unending well of clever! Maybe those holes in the buttons could be "thread holes?"
ReplyDeleteThese are absolutely adorable! Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeletecomplimenti!!!!favolosi!!!ciao!
ReplyDeletei love your buttons!!!!
ReplyDeletefound this when i googled buttons. doesn't really have (i think) a name for the holes:
* Shank buttons have a hollow protrusion on the back through which thread is sewn to attach the button.[17] Button shanks may be made from a separate piece of the same or a different substance as the button itself, and added to the back of the button, or be carved or moulded directly onto the back of the button, in which latter case the button is referred to by collectors as having a 'self-shank'.
* Flat or sew-through buttons have holes through which thread is sewn to attach the button. Flat buttons may be attached by sewing machine rather than by hand, and may be used with heavy fabrics by working a thread shank to extend the height of the button above the fabric.
I was completely sure you had a mold for those buttons - you are a genius!!

ReplyDeleteI think if the hole the button goes through is a "button hole," then I would assume the whole the thread goes through is a "thread hole." Adorable cookies! :)

ReplyDeleteLove the button and the cookie. So very clever of you, as usual! My son was 6.5 weeks early and 4.5 lbs. And at 32 he is expecting his first child in one month making me a first time grandmother!
ReplyDeleteThose are darling!
ReplyDeleteSuch simple cute cookies; you do a great job!
ReplyDeleteYour story took me back a bit...thirty years back. One of my best friends lived in our neighborhood and we were both pregnant at the same time. She had struggled with a miscarriage and so there was huge concern about her making it to term and though she did not, she had a healthy but tiny baby girl that weighed 2lb 6oz.
I on the other hand, had a baby that was REALLY happy staying inside to play, so after going overdue for THREE weeks, my daughter was also delivered via C-section at a whopping 10lb 11oz!
We did have an easier time of it initially but Amy thrived and she and my daughter Emily became best of friends til we moved when they were 6; you can imagine what a pair they were!
Thanks for that reminder...and - I think buttonhole is one of those words with multiple meanings...meaning both the holes in the button and the hole the button goes through!
I love these! I might save them for the boys first birthday. I need to practice my icing techniques first!
ReplyDeleteIngenious. Those buttons are awesome.
ReplyDeleteAnd here is where the word nerd in me comes out:
Buttonhole - the fabric slit you push a button through.
Button hole - the hole in the plastic button you stitch the thread through.
How cute are these:)
ReplyDeleteMany a little makes a mickle...................................................................
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute... Great idea!
ReplyDeleteAdorable! I love your little cookies. It's a funny way to decorate them I think :)
ReplyDeleteAdorable cookies and thanks for sharing on how to make the buttons :D

ReplyDeleteButton, button, who's got the button...
ReplyDeleteSuper darling cookies. I know many moms who would go nutso for them.
these are soooo cute!!!! you're so creative!!! love it
ReplyDeleteI'm a few days behind on commenting (have you noticed?), but I HAD to leave a comment on these. The little buttons are absolutely stunning! They look great.
ReplyDeleteYou had me at ... "cute as" Those are delightful. So appealing. And there is no name for the holes in a flat back button. I've been a seamstress for twenty years before joining the foodie collective. There are shank buttons (the kind with metal or plastic protrusions for the thread), but buttons with holes are just buttons with holes ! Not to be confused with buttonholes, which can be all manner of shapes, like "keyholes" or "eyelet" and don't get me started on Aiglets!
ReplyDeletegreat tutorial & post...LOVE!!!
ReplyDeleteso cute! :)
ReplyDeleteso cute! :)
ReplyDeleteOh Bridget!

i was wondering though...what recipie do you use for your royal icing..i just cant seem to find a good one
These look amazing! And I LOVE the shade of blue you've got!
ReplyDeleteThe cookies are too cute, but the details really got my attention. My oldest son was born 11 weeks early and came in at 2 pounds 13 ounces. He'll be nine on July 1st and is almost up to my shoulders. I'm going to make the Star Wars cookies for him. Do you have any tips on tinting the rest of the characters?
ReplyDeleteAdrienne...that is so neat! I can't believe you had a little 2lb 13oz-er, too! ;)
ReplyDeleteThe other Star Wars cookies....
I think I would tint Yoda with AmeriColor Avocado ...
Storm Trooper....I would use Royal icing to cover the whole thing.
Boba Fett (sp)...I think I'd have to confer with kiddo on that one! ;)
Cute as a button!!!!!! really!!!! haha love it
ReplyDeleteI love these buttons! Thank you for sharing your skill and knowledge with the rest of us!
