Seriously, it'll take you less than an hour (unless you are going to blog about them, then it will take FOUR), assuming you have chow mein noodles, marshmallows and Easter candy on hand. And who doesn't? ;)
Bird's Nests
{adapted from King Arthur Flour Cookie Companion}
3 c. mini marshmallows
3 TBSP unsalted butter
1/2 tsp vanilla
4 c. dry chow mein noodles
small candies, jelly beans, m & m's, etc.
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
Over low heat, melt the marshmallows and butter in a large saucepan.
Once melted, stir in the vanilla, then the chow mein noodles.
Coat your hands liberally with shortening, (butter doesn't work as well) and have some nearby for re-coating.
{Your hands will feel so soft all day. :) Hmmm...maybe I should carry a little tub of Crisco in my purse?}
Allow the nests to cool, then fill with with the candy of your choice....
{I used mini Robin's Egg Whoppers.}
{And maybe a mama bird, or Peep, watching over!}
OK...so while I was taking pictures, I thought..."wouldn't these be cute placecards?!?"
{I used a toothpick to attach the Peep to the nest.}
Remember to link up your Easter goodies and crafts here. Or, just go check them out...I am blown-away with all of the CUTE ideas!!! You guys are so fun! I'm stealing ALL of your ideas next year!

ReplyDeleteDear Sweet Bridget...
ReplyDeleteFor some reason...
your sweet little bird nest with little eggs made me feel so sentimental...so blessed to know YOU...to have you in my life.
When I saw the little nest on your baking pan...I noticed the wear and tear of the pan...you know the little brown spots that occur after years of using a pan...and I just thought...I wonder what all Sweet Bridget has baked using THAT PAN?!
I know that many sweet things have been baked on that pan...that you have shared with all of your blog readers...with your friends...and with your family.
You are a delight!
Why am I so sentimental all of a sudden?
Guess it's because I truly am so grateful to know you and adore you.
You are wonderful Bridget.
And I love you and I have never even had the pleasure of HUGGING you tight!
But just consider yourself HUGGED with a big ole bear hug! ;o)
The bird nest are just precious...and I know those WHOPPER eggs..were divine!
Happy Easter my Sweet Bridget!
Enjoy your day! xxooxx

ReplyDeleteI made these today and they are soooo yummy and even cuter! I posted a pic on my blog. I didn't have time to write anything else. I am hoping to get the recipe and credit to you tomorrow! http://mommahenscoop.com
ReplyDeleteHow long do these stay fresh? I want to make for a cupcake toppers for a baby shower next week? Would they stay fresh for 7 days? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I wouldn't make them a week ahead of time. Maybe a day or two? they don't take long, so you could easily make them the night before or day of the shower. :)
DeleteI had these all the time as kids! Definitely going to make some of these. And I may just blog about them! Yum!
ReplyDeletei, sadly, had an awful experience trying to make these! they looked so cute! but, from the globs of noodles and mallows refusing to stick together and form a ball/nest of ANY kind, to it all demanding to stick to my hands, no matter the amount of crisco slathered, i ended up with a very frustrating endeavor! i don't know what went wrong! :( i tried to add some more melted marshmallow to see if it would help things stick, but it didn't really. i ended up spooning the mix onto the paper and then trying with a wish and a prayer to form them into something that resembled a nest and not take all of it up with my hand. we will see once these cool, if they stick together at all. hopefully they will hold some candy eggs and i am sure my girls will love them regardless, but i am sad to say this wasn't a successful endeavor. i wonder if you need the nostalgia of your childhood thrown into the ingredients to make this work! i've never had them or seen them before, so perhaps that was the ingredient missing. oh well! they all end up in the same place in the belly, so i'm sure the taste will be yummy! thanks for the great recipe idea even though it didn't pan out for me. they sure look cute in your picture!!
ReplyDeletepatricia...
DeleteI'm so sorry you had a problem with them! They ARE really sticky and you do have to use lots of Crisco on your hands...and reapply, but you said you did that. I can't imagine what went wrong. Hmm...
I know that is frustrating when things don't turn out. :(
I just came down to read the comments because I had the EXACT SAME THING happen to me tonight! I was so excited to make these and take them to church tomorrow for all the little kiddies and I could NOT form a nest to save my life! I did the same thing, spooned them out and formed the closest thing I could to a nest and stuck them in the freezer lol :( I hope they turn out because I stupidly told the pastor's wife that I had a cute little surprise I was bringing tomorrow lol
DeleteHowever, I also made some chocolate chip ones (for the older kids) and they turned out amazing. If I had 2 muffin pans, I would have just made more of those for the little kids lol :/ Oh well ;) I still think they are adorable ideas!
I will admit that I did not read thru every comment at this 11th hourbut I would appreciate if anyone can help. I made a variation of this recipe tonight and I did not have parchment paper available. Only foil or wax paper. I opted for the wax paper.... and now, I have nearly 2 dozen cute little nests that are stuck to the wax paper. What I am wondering is if anyone has a clever solution to "unstuck" the nests without saving gobs of paper on the bottom. I've thought of reheating them somehow, and right now I'm thinking hair-dryer!
DeletePlease offer any tricks you know of - I will try anything to save these cute little things.
thanks,
Kim
I made these this morning and they turned out so cute! I read what @Patricia had written so I was a little nervous to try them, but they turned out great! I did mold them into nest shapes inside muffin tins and left them there until they were firm enough to remove. I wonder if maybe they won't firm up enough you could try to add a little confectioners sugar to the melted marshmallows, that may tighten it up a little. Just thought that may help someone! Oh and I did find I needed to reapply the crisco to my hands after each nest. Thanks for the great recipe!
ReplyDeleteThese are so cute and so easy and quick to make. I had no problems with them sticking together. They will be a hit at our church egg hunt! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteHow many did your recipe make?
ReplyDeleteHi Christy - I just made these tonight, and I got nine ~3" nice-sized nests. If you made them a little smaller, you can probably get 12. They were easy to pull together; I used Pam spray for my hands and it worked great. I only had to spray my hands about every other one. I rolled them into a ball first, then used my thumbs to make the inside of the nest, and flattened into a nest shape. Very cute idea Bridget! Thanks for sharing! I also made the Bunny Bait for our family dinner on Thursday with an Easter theme and it was a big hit! I've made 3 batches so far (I did use 3 packages of OR Tender White microwave popcorn for each batch...that helped with the salty/sweet taste. I used the Wilton Pastel Confetti melts and added the confetti sprinkles & pastel M&Ms - it looked and tasted great!) Happy Easter everyone!
Deletewhen you said Vanilla did you mean Vanilla Extract?
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea! I think pretzel sticks would work well also, to get a nice salty sweet treat!
ReplyDeleteThis is sooo adorable... I sprayed cooking spray on my hands in between each bird's nest that I made, and that seemed to work great! Thanks for an easy Easter inspired treat!
ReplyDeleteMy girls and I just made a batch of these. They turned out so cute! We also used the Crisco cooking spray after every couple of nest. We are getting ready to start batch number two, as soon as these set up enough to move into a container to save for the Easter gathering at Nana's! This is such a great memory to place in my 'mother~daughter' file in my head. I am going to let them have a go at it alone on the next batch so I can take photos 'sticky' free for scrapbooking later too! Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea.
ReplyDeleteOMG MY NAME'S MOLLY! I have a placecard on your nest. =P
ReplyDeleteYeah. Anyways.
These are uber cute. I'm making them.
Thanks for all the wonderful ideas. My daughter is having her first birthday party this weekend, and naturally we are pulling out all the stops. I am using so many of your recipes, including cute little birds nest. Her party is "spring" themed. So much fun! Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteVery cute idea, my grand kids will enjoy filling this baskets for the old folks center for easter baskets, thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteHi, you may want to know someone is stealing your ideas AND YOUR PHOTOS and claiming them as her own on Etsy: http://bakeat350.blogspot.com/2010/04/sweet-birds-nests.html I would report her. Shame on them.
ReplyDeleteHow many will your recipe make? They look super cute to send to school.
ReplyDeleteI found your recipe link on Pinterest. Thank you! I made these sweet nests following your recipe, except made them smaller and formed them in mini muffin tins that had been lightly coated with non-stick cooking spray. The recipe made 48 nests, that are still a good sized cookie! Three Whoppers Mini Robin Eggs fit perfectly & were "stuck" into each nest using a tiny spot of melted marshmallow. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThese are just to die for! Thanks for the recipe
ReplyDeleteAny storage tips? Freezer or room temp in an airtight container? How long do they stay fresh? Thanks in advance!
